After finishing 16-17 in the 2023-2024 season and 16-16 in 2024-2025, this year’s varsity team entered the season determined to take the next step as a program. With five returning seniors, expectations were high.
For varsity player Jonah Johnson, the difference was clear. “What separates this year’s varsity team from previous ones is the chemistry we built over the summer and last season,” he said. “We also strengthened our bond by spending time together off the basketball court, such as attending cheer and dance competitions and going out to eat for breakfast and dinner.”
The team also benefited from new defensive coach Bob Curran, who brought a whole new approach to the program and training. “Our group found success because our new defensive coach, Bob Curran, brings college-level skills and a positive, disciplined mindset to the team,” he explained. “Our head coach, John Daniels, also keeps us focused and drives us to never be satisfied.”
Defense became a major focus this season. The team emphasized some key things. “We emphasize our defensive efforts, rotation, and reading their offense – knowing their plays,” he said. “I’m very thankful for the effort our coaches put into scouting reports on each and every team we play.”
Johnson also reflected on how his role changed this season. “My role has evolved from last season, when I focused on rebounding and doing the little things, to becoming a leader and role model for the juniors on the team,” he said. “Although I still rebound and handle the smaller tasks, I have also become the second scoring option if my brother has a bad shooting night.”
Johnson emphasized that “Rebounding and doing the little things remain essential, not optional. These have become expectations for us and for future players at Carl Sandburg.”
In close games, the team relied on composure and communication. “I hardly feel pressure when it comes to high-stakes moments or close games,” Johnson said. “But when I do feel it, I make sure to encourage our team, and in turn, they do the same to me.”
One adjustment the team made this season was that, “We started to do huddles after a shooting foul to make sure we are all on the same page.” Johnson stated in an interview.
The JV team focused on player development and consistency throughout the season. Coaches emphasized fundamentals, defensive intensity, and preparing underclassmen for future varsity roles. Many JV players showed significant improvement as the season progressed, gaining valuable experience in tight games and high-energy matchups. Their hard work this year helps ensure the program’s future remains strong.
At the freshman level, players worked on adjusting to the speed and physicality of high school basketball. The season provided key learning opportunities, from understanding offensive sets to improving defensive communication.
As the year went on, confidence grew, teamwork improved, and several players established themselves as future contributors to the Sandburg program.
From freshmen learning the basics to seniors setting new expectations, this basketball season showed that Sandburg’s program is moving forward together. With strong leadership, defensive discipline, and a commitment to team chemistry, the Eagles have built a foundation that will carry into next year and beyond.
